If you give me this job, sir, I won't disappoint Your face tells me you get right to the point Your face tells me you read my resume You got questions, I can explain I got out of college, studied liberal arts I went straight to work at a coffee cart I went straight to work until I got fired The manager there was always wired OK here it is straight: I got a few gaps in my resume Hey, hey what can I say? I got a few gaps in my resume Got my first real job at venture dot-com But I got the pink slip when the market went down I got the pink slip and I moved back home I thought about grad school, feared the loan So I volunteered registering citizens to vote For friendly folks and the right to toke For friendly folks living in the hills My pay was green but it wasn't dollar bills Hey, hey what can I say? I got a few gaps in my resume OK here it is straight: I got a few gaps in my resume Then I worked construction, I hurt my back I took worker's comp. and the state took it back I took worker's comp. and I took another job The state calls a double dip third-degree fraud Then I worked in a bank saying no to the poor But I got let go when I let one in the door I got let go trying to help a brother out That's the reason for my loan default Hey, hey what can I say? I got a few gaps in my resume OK here it is straight: I got a few gaps in my resume Being unemployed I was high and dry And you don't wanna know the things I did to get by You don't wanna know the things I did to get paid It involved costumes and facial paint Then I guy I went to school with hacked a fund He owed me money and he gave me some He owed me money and he hooked me up With a couple job leads and a thousand bucks OK here it is straight: I got a few gaps in my resume Hey, hey what can I say? I got a few gaps in my resume I want to get my life back on the right track I was so awful glad when you called me back I was so awful glad to meet face to face To explain to you the gaps in my resume

A preacher's son born with a serpent's tongue Learned a lesson when he was young He could shout out loud and draw a real good crowd People coming from miles around He had a book with a cross It makes a pretty good prop But then a brand new toy made him the happiest boy It amplified his voice for all to enjoy And it's strange It's shaped like a gun with a trigger like one In flames Over the megaphone it's hellfire and brimstone A pill-popping lug with a voice like a drug And a mug three wives couldn't love And a dinosaur brain, a dinosaur mouth Around his middle hung a dinosaur pouch He did a comedy show At least that's what he told He brought millions of smiles across the AM dials To all except the suckers underneath his dogpile It's strange If the pen beats a sword how about a radio In flames Over the microphone it's hellfire and brimstone Hellfire and brimstone Hellfire, hellfire and brimstone, hellfire Hellfire, hellfire and brimstone, hellfire He's mad as hell and he knows how to yell Above all he knows how to sell To keep butts in seats then get 'em out in the streets His Nielsen ratings they cannot be beat He's got a book with a swastika It makes a pretty good prop Lookout he's using technology to spread ideology And some say he commands an army It's strange Satellite systems and televisions In flames Piped into your home it's hellfire and brimstone Piped into in your home, hellfire and brimstone Right there in your home Hellfire, hellfire and brimstone Burning, burning, burning, burning Hellfire, hellfire and brimstone Burning, burning, burning, burning Hellfire, hellfire and brimstone Everywhere I hear the sound of Hellfire, hellfire and brimstone Burning, burning, burning, burning Hellfire, hellfire and brimstone

Halo of Blue 02:06
When the nighttime settles and the sunshine's gone Shadows are long I see a ring around the moon Because I got one too Halo of blue And I see that man living up in the moon In his lonely room I think he feels the way I do He's looking through A halo of blue Well I ain't complaining But it won't let go So I'm letting you know That I just can't shake this halo I'm like a skipping stone to the glass of a lake I watch it break And see the stone sink out of view Beneath a ring or two Halos of blue Well I hate explaining But it won't let go So I'm letting you know That I just can't shake this halo Every shooting star on its way to die On a midnight ride Drops right down on you A melancholy hue A halo of blue All the fallen angels gotta walk the earth Hiding their hurt Maybe this describes you Do you have one too? A halo of blue Halo of blue Halo of blue Halo of blue

Elvis Presley was the king His throne was hand me down Hand me down Muddy and Bo Diddley already wore that crown Wore that crown Yes they had it down The story and the glory Changes with only The story of whose glory's left behind Babe Ruth had a mighty swing Sports fans say it's true Yes it's true If he faced Satchel Paige I wonder how he'd do How he'd do 0 and 2? The story and the glory Changes with only The story of whose glory's left behind Washington's a founding dad Father he knows best He knows best Oughta' ask Martha if he sewed that flag he blessed Flag he blessed Mama gets no rest The story and the glory Changes with only The story of whose glory's left behind "Let's go," Lewis said to Clark, "to our new land trust." New land trust The folks along the way said, "It ain't new to us." New to us That's news to us The story and the glory Changes with only The story of whose glory's left behind

I tried to run I tried to hide But when I got out I climbed right back inside You got a hold on me Like gravity Something keeps pulling you Right back to me Why do I fight? It don’t take long Every time I think I’m off the ground You keep coming around I tried to leave I tried to go But after all this time You’d think I’d know You got a hold on me Like gravity Something keeps pulling You back to me Why do I fight? It don’t takes long Every time I think I’ve got this down You keep coming around You keep coming around Every time I try to make a change I might as well be calling out your name I tried to run (I tried to leave) I tried to hide (I tried to go) But after all this time, baby You’d think I’d know You got a hold on me Like gravity Something keeps pulling you Right back to me Why do I fight? It don’t take long Every time I think I’m off the ground You keep coming around You keep coming around You keep coming around You keep coming around You keep coming around You keep coming around (and around, and around, and around…)

Before you were my baby Whose baby were you? Ooh-la-la, ooh-la-la, ooh-la-la, ooh-la-la, ooh-la-la, ahhh... Before you were my baby Before you were my mate Did you have a lot of fun? Did you always have a date? Did you make every scene? Could you ever be true Before you were my baby Whose baby were you? Before you were my baby Whose baby were you? Before you were my baby Whose baby were you? Ooh-la-la, ooh-la-la, ooh-la-la, ooh-la-la, ooh-la-la, ahhh...

Oh Hudson ain't you grand with all your tugs and PCBs Your waters always call out to my curiosity We had some fun but always there's a place I'd rather be High above the mele on a pristine mountain stream Mountain stream Runnin' in my dreams I looked far and wide Of every place I've seen Nothin' moves me like a mountain stream I've been to London, Paris too, tryin' to find my way I saw the Thames and I saw the Seine on Les Champs-Elysees Everything's so interesting, and I wished I belonged I didn't feel as good as on a mountain stream back home Mountain stream Runnin' in my dreams I looked far and wide Of every place I've seen Nothin' moves me like a mountain stream If I reach the pearly gates and I get asked inside I hope I find the paradise I knew before I died Heaven in its theory is a sure sight to be seen But I won't wanna' be there if it ain't a mountain stream Mountain stream Runnin' in my dreams I looked far and wide Of every place I've seen Nothin' moves me like a mountain stream Nothin' moves me like a mountain stream

about

This solo debut is the second time I have worked with my friend, Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, New York City's premier rock 'n' roll project manager and fount of wisdom about music and life. (Examples: "A mistake played twice is a part." "Good sucks when great is possible.")

1. "Gaps in My Resume." This was written during the Great Recession about my alleged career. I'll let it explain why I did not put out any music between 2010 and 2020. Watch the video here: youtu.be/YqCLGpFbY7M

2. "Hellfire & Brimstone." Written in early 2010 about the Outrage Industrial Complex. It was recorded that summer, when the lyrics did not seem derivative. If I cut it today (fall 2020) I would fix a couple words in the third verse. The A-list band makes it rock, though. Check out the psychedelic video by B.A. Miale: youtu.be/EvldSZ9UxuA

3. "Halo of Blue." A song about being bummed (that makes me pleased). Who played the acoustic guitar solo? Me. That's right, me. For the video, filmed at the 2019 Halloween Parade in NYC, cameraman Mike Storey slowed the music down as it played in my ear so that when I sang along the effect was of characters moving around me in double-time. Editors Linda Coelln and Gabriel Berde skillfully synchronized music and film. I put the words 'wah-wah-ooh' on the title page as an homage to Lou Reed's song, 'Halloween Parade,' honoring souls lost to AIDS. We are all pretty blue that there is no parade in 2020 because of a new pandemic. Watch here: youtu.be/9E1AP2E8Qs4

4. "The Story & the Glory." It has always been pure joy to make music with Elena Skye and Boo Reiners of the Demolition String Band (www.elenaandboo.com). They are pair of pickers to whom I owe so much, including meeting many great musicians (and also my wife, Kristen). The lyrics here speak for themselves. I think they get more understated every day.

5. "You Keep Coming Around (feat. Charlene McPherson)." One of my favorite singers ever is Charlene McPherson. I have been honored to duet with her many times, as well as record harp with her rock band, Spanking Charlene (www.spankingcharlene.com). I'm so grateful she agreed to sing on this record, and I challenged myself to write us good duets. Because of her, and this kickass band, I think this one sparkles.

6. "Before You Were My Baby (feat. Charlene McPherson)." One of the things I'm proudest of here, and which now makes me the most melancholy, is that this features the late Kelley Looney on bass. Of course I had been a fan for years; El Corazon was a model for this record. It was exciting when Kelley was available and willing to record with me. He was gracious and profoundly professional. His solid, smart musicality showed in the fact that he always made subtle changes in third verses. I was shy and a little awed during the session -- Roscoe played exquisite blues guitar -- and though I wanted to know if Kelley actually liked my songs I thought it would be uncool to ask. A short time later I was in the hallowed 11th Street Bar and Kelley's friend Kenny was there. He said Kelley told him he dug my tunes, and that the groove on this one made him think of Tom Waits. I never got a better compliment.

7. "Lucky Day." Warren Zevon's "Model Citizen" was on my mind when I wrote it, and it's about the guy who has to clean up after him.

8. "Mountain Stream (feat. Elena Skye & Boo Reiners)." This is another song turned to magic by Elena and Boo. I wrote it because I love to flyfish, but I live in New York City, so I end up watching a lot of trout videos on YouTube. Too often the music sucks. I took it upon myself to write a better soundtrack. My friend and great musical influence, Ednor Therriault, a.k.a. Bob Wire, in my hometown of Missoula, Montana, recorded a beautiful version of this song and released it before I did (check it out here: bobwiremusic.bandcamp.com/track/mountain-stream) I love it in exactly the same way that I love how Gram Parsons released "Wild Horses" before the Rolling Stones. The lyrics are about as honest as I can get. I later heard a story that Gifford Pinchot once said basically the third verse. Which I also love. Video: youtu.be/-d5LKRuHKsQ

9. "Beautiful Drugs & Hard Women." Written by a 29-year-old who wanted such things, or thought he should. Roscoe played an electric 12-string that gave it great jangle. I still love the music.

10. "Elemental." Written because I'm such a fan of Keith's solo albums and I so badly wanted another one. You bet I think it's awesome that Tim Hatfield also engineered on Main Offender.

11. "Keep Me." A simple love song made gorgeous by Charlene.
